I’ll be honest — pulling into Mitre 10 on a Tuesday morning, Columbus Coffee wasn’t the stop I had in mind. Too busy, I thought. Too much noise and movement for a quiet coffee. I nearly kept driving.

I’m glad I didn’t.

Walking in, the room was full — but it wore its busyness well. There was none of the clatter and chaos that can make a busy cafe feel like hard work. Instead, it felt open and unhurried, with friendly staff, a menu wallboard you could read easily from your seat, and menu cards on the counter for good measure. Outside, the garden centre offered an alternative — tables at the front for those who’d rather sit among greenery than four walls. A genuinely pleasant choice to have.

The Coffee

Rich, full flavoured and properly hot. Columbus Coffee knows its way around a cappuccino and doesn’t cut corners. A consistent, well made cup that set the morning up well.

The Food

Free range eggs over easy on rye toast with real butter — simple, well sourced, and done properly. There’s something quietly reassuring about a cafe that makes good ingredient choices without making a fuss about it. The eggs were cooked as ordered, the rye toast had substance to it, and the butter was the real thing. At $24.00 for coffee and a cooked breakfast, the value holds up comfortably.

The Experience

The staff were well presented, attentive without hovering, and friendly in a way that felt natural rather than rehearsed. Despite a full house, there was a sense of space around each table — the kind of room that absorbs its crowd rather than being overwhelmed by it. Conversation came easily.

The Verdict

Columbus Coffee at Mitre 10 is the perfect place to slow down for an hour. Come for a light lunch, a coffee and cake, or a juice and a cookie — then take a leisurely wander through the garden centre and let the morning stretch out. It’s the kind of stop that earns a regular spot in the rotation.

My first visit on the 28th of April left me with a good feeling about the place — the coffee was solid, the space welcoming, and the staff warm. The food that day had been a cabinet choice that hadn’t quite landed, but the cafe itself had done nothing wrong. So when I found myself back in Pukekohe on the 5th of May, returning felt less like a decision and more like a natural next stop.

Walking in, the room had that same easy quality — tables occupied, a few locals waiting on their coffees, a quiet hum of midday trade. Nothing rushed, nothing forced. Just a cafe doing what a good cafe does.

The Coffee

Fresh, full and rich — exactly as it should be. Sparrow & Sweet has consistency on its side, and that matters more than people realise. A coffee that delivers the same quality visit after visit is worth coming back for on its own merits.

The Food

This time I chose better. The kumara and spinach puff was a revelation — light in texture but surprisingly satisfying, the kind of cabinet food that leaves you feeling like you’ve had a proper lunch rather than a hurried snack. It’s a reminder that the cabinet here is worth a careful look before you order. I’ll be remembering that one.

The Experience

The staff remain friendly and genuinely helpful, the space is clean and considered, and there’s a quality here that’s increasingly rare — the sense that you can stay as long as you like or leave when you’re ready. Linger or stop and go. Either way, Sparrow & Sweet makes you feel welcome.

The Verdict

I left feeling glad I’d gone back. The space, the coffee, and this time the food all came together. Sparrow & Sweet is earning its place as a regular stop on the road in — and that feeling of space is something I won’t forget in a hurry.

Queen Street in Pukekohe is well travelled — one of those routes everyone passes through rather than seeks out. Sparrow & Sweet sits at a roundabout alongside two other businesses, which means it catches passing trade easily. What it does well is make you want to stop rather than just glance and drive on.

Walking in, the space opens up generously. Seating is well spread, the feel is relaxed, and while I was there a steady mix of locals and workers came and went. It has the comfortable, unhurried quality of a cafe that knows its neighbourhood. I felt settled in from the moment I sat down.

The Coffee

The cappuccino delivered exactly what I was hoping for — fresh, rich, full bodied and served promptly. No complaints here at all. On the coffee alone, Sparrow & Sweet earns its place on the Queen Street strip.

The Food

The spinach and cheese filo was my choice, and in hindsight perhaps not the wisest one for a Monday afternoon. At that time of day, cabinet food has had a few hours to sit, and it showed. This is less a reflection on the cafe than a reminder to myself — earlier visits and a closer look at what’s freshest in the cabinet will serve me better next time. A cheese scone taken away rounded things out, though the filo left me a little flat.

The Experience

The staff member was friendly and genuinely helpful — the kind of easy, warm service that makes a place feel welcoming rather than transactional. Sparrow & Sweet has a good heart to it, and that counts for a lot.

The Verdict

A cafe worth returning to — and I will. Next time I’ll arrive earlier, order smarter, and linger a little longer in what is quietly one of the more comfortable stops on this stretch of road.

Pukekohe is a town that moves at its own pace, and Seddon Street has no shortage of places to stop and draw breath. The Flour Mill Bakery and Cafe sits comfortably among them — busy, bright, and doing a steady trade on a Tuesday afternoon.

Walking in, the cabinet looked promising. Plenty on offer, tables filled with the quiet chatter of locals, and a clean, no-fuss space that signals a place that knows what it is. A stop-and-go kind of cafe — functional, familiar, and fine for what it is.

The Coffee The cappuccino was the highlight of the visit. Fresh, hot, and rich with a good depth of flavour — exactly as I like it, and it arrived quickly. Credit where it’s due, the coffee alone would bring me back to the counter.

The Food My bacon and egg slice told a different story. It arrived overcooked — the pastry tough enough that a steak knife was needed to get through it. That detail alone said everything. What lingered with me afterward was a simple question — could the staff member have mentioned it wasn’t at its best and offered me an alternative? A small gesture, but one that would have made a real difference to the experience.

The donut, tucked away for the road, offered a sweeter note to finish on.

The Verdict The Flour Mill has genuine potential and the coffee proves it can deliver. But on this visit, the food fell short and the overall feel was more transit stop than destination cafe. Worth another look earlier in the day when the cabinet is fresh — and next time I’ll take a closer look at what’s on offer before I order.
